Self Advocacy Training Overview

The purpose of this program is to nourish an understanding of the need for self advocacy. RCM may teach, instruct, educate and demonstrate how to advocate for his /her own interest in all areas with an emphasis on his or her rights as an adult and as a citizen, supporting the client with making informed choices and that their input and wants are significant.

The client may also be introduced to areas that may provide information leading to a fundamental awareness of the city, state and federal government system. The program may cover current events, important social and political issues and basic laws, which may ultimately affect the client.

The client may learn about voting, elections, grievance procedures, learn how to be assertive on the phone while remaining courteous. The trainer may go with the client as needed, on trips with agencies or health care providers, and support the consumer with how to make sure he/she receives the needed services.
